That's how belly dancing was originally not the glamourised, Hollywood one where they basically have not much on them. Those costumes are pretty but I used to think that's how they used to dance in the past until I watched videos that educated me. Also belly dancing was used after someone gave birth to help with pelvic strength or something like that. Basically the way kegel exercises are done after birth this also used to be done.

Go watch chakacha, baikoko, ngoma, singeli. If you want swahili area dance not just in Tanzania, you can watch salegy/kawitry from Madagascar, Mbiwi/Mgodro from Comoros, Niiko from Somalia. Videos I recommend: "Nipe nikupe" ; "Nasema nawe" ; "Wawili wapenda nao" ; "Waaberi" and "Ayuuto" from Fadumiino ; "Cajiinleey" from Farah Kaftan ; "ataova fomba" and "Manahiragna" from Cisca ; that's to start somewhere.

I feel like toning and targeting your muscles in these types of ways _definitely_ helped generations of your ancestors out in childbirth, which was a woman's biggest obstacle for centuries. Many of us died bringing the next generations into the world. It's really cool because we see the dancing as culture and expression, but if you zoom waaaaay out and view it all in a biology/sociology/anthropology sense it could have had some really interesting effects on the course of cultures who practice.

it is fairly well known that belly dancing as practiced in generations of traditional homes was a women's art that strengthened core muscles before and after childbirth. Arab/NA women know this. NurJahan actually showcases the dance as it is practiced at home by women for women. Unlike the highly sexualized practice outside.

@minimalistdansethose girls are truly the best for more traditional. I learned from their videos 23yrs ago. Jilliana is the choreographer for the bellydance superstars. She has a more jazzy flavor to her style. Its good to have some diversity so you can fall into your own personal style. It will set you apart from everyone else that focuses in on one single person to teach them. Yes you learn the same things. However, as you can see with these two gals, you can blend them to fit your body the best.

You absolutely can. I would recommend traditional egyptian, it is much more classical and modest. And I egypt today it is illegal for dancer to show their stomachs, so much less sexualized and more conservative. (Im a teacher) ❤
